What you will need for your hamster

I know when I first got a hamster, I didn't really know what I needed for her. So this page covers what you will need for your new hamster. Make sure that you purchase these things before you purchase your hamster. For a more detailed guide visit the basic hamster care page!

Hamster shopping list

You could print out this page and tick as you buy!

1. A large hamster cage (£50+, can buy online from; zooplus and viovet)

Preferably bought online not from a pet shop as pet shop cages are far too small.

2. Food dish and water bottle (£2.00 each, can buy from pet shops or online)

If the cage doesnt come with these, then make sure that you buy them right away!

3. Food (£3.00, can buy from pet shops or online)

I recommend that you buy Harry/Hazel hamster, Carefresh complete menu and Cunipic food mixes. You can also give your hamster fruits and vegetables.

4. Bedding (£5.00+ depending on brand, can buy online or from pet shops)

Make sure that you dont use pine, cedar or scented wood shavings for bedding. Instead, use Carefresh, fitch, boxo and any other paper based beddings. I explained why not to use pine or cedar beddings on the basic hamster care page.

5. Nesting material (Free!)

Do NOT use cotton/fluff bedding as it is very dangerous. Dont believe the package when it says it is safe. I explained why on the basic hamster care page.

Instead, use shredded up toilet paper for free! Again, I explianed how to make this on the basic hamster care page.

6. Wheel (£8.00+, can buy online or from pet shops)

Wheels are extremely important for hamsters as they run up to 5-8 miles per night. Avoid the wire and mesh wheels as they can cause bumble foot.

The wheel should also be big enough for your hamster so make sure that for a syrian, the wheel is atleast 8 inches or above. For a dwarf make sure it is 6 inches or above. Flying saucers are also good if you cant purchase a wheel.

7. Chews (£2.00, can buy online and from pet shops)

To stop teeth from over growing.

8. Toys (£2.00+, can buy online and from pet shops)

You can purchase toys from your local pet shop, online or even make your own.

Total price: Around £70+ can be up to £100+!
